Our Journey

1976-1986

In 1976, South Africa was a very different country—apartheid shaped everyday life, opportunity was unequal, and for Black entrepreneurs, building a sustainable business required courage, resilience and determination. But in the community of Seshego Zone 2, two brothers saw an opportunity to serve their people. Their names were Stanley Thema & Jackie Tema. On 1 June 1976, they opened the doors of what would become LEBOWA Funeral Parlour. Two brothers, one vision, and the beginning of a journey that would span generations.

1986-1996

Then came another defining moment in 1996. Twenty years after the founding of LEBOWA, leadership passed into the next generation. William Tema took over the reins of the organisation.

1996-2006

y 2006, LEBOWA had reached its 30th anniversary. Mr Tema, as CEO, pushed the boundaries to which Lebowa had previously been confined. Lebowa Funerals now expanded beyond just Limpopo and neighbouring communities, expanding into Gauteng and opening branches in Tembisa and Edenvale respectively.

2006-2016

The organisation reported more than 250 vehicles and more than 200 permanent employees, with branches serving communities across Limpopo, Gauteng and beyond.

2016-2026

The organisation took an important step in its succession journey by introducing four mentee directors into the company as part of its succession-planning programme. Today, Lebowa stands 32 branches strong, always ready to serve the community at large.
